CFD is another simulation software used by the PES team as a key tool in delivering performance optimisation. CFD simulates the interaction of liquids and gases with surfaces defined by boundary conditions. This simulation technique allows the fluid flow around or through any product to be analysed in great detail.
CFD allows the fluid mass flow, velocity, density, temperature, pressure, concentration or any fluid flow property to be calculated throughout a CAD model. The interaction of the fluid with its solid boundaries, such as fluid-dynamic forces and heat transfer rates can also be calculated accurately for use in stress analysis.
CFD is critical tool for the PES design team in delivering flow and aerodynamic efficiency during the design process. CFD has multiple applications and functions across many sectors including
◊ The rate of drug delivery to a cancerous cell.
◊ The drag experienced by an aircraft, car, athlete or a piece of sports equipment.
◊ Combustion efficiency of an engine.
◊ Efficiency of airflow through an air box.
◊ Predicting the heat transfer rates in complex heat exchangers or cooling efficiency for a race engine.
◊ Optimising the performance of wind turbine.
By using CFD in the design process our design engineers can verify that products conform to a client’s specifications early in the design cycle, greatly accelerating the product development process. CFD can also be used in the development of competitive high end sports equipment as part of our performance optimisation process.
CFD can be used to calculate design mass-flow rates, pressure drops, heat transfer rates, and fluid dynamic forces such as lift, drag and pitching moments.
If you are looking to drive and optimise the performance of a current piece of equipment or you wish to understand how CFD can be used to support your project then please call for a chat and we will be happy to discuss the best options to suit your needs.
The accuracy and fidelity of modern CFD methods has significantly increased the level of design insight available to design engineers throughout the design process and therefore greatly reduces our clients exposure to technical risk when developing thermal and fluid-based products.
The use of CFD as a key tool in our design process leads to far fewer physical prototypes being necessary during development, far less prototype testing and consequently reduces the time-to-market and cost-to-market substantially.
◊ Increased insight into systems that may be difficult to prototype or test through R&D
◊ Ability to identify performance issues during the design process allowing changes and optimisation
◊ Accurately predict mass flow rates, pressure drops, mixing rates, heat transfer rates & fluid dynamic forces
◊ Aerodynamics
◊  Industrial Fluid Dynamics
◊ Fluid Structure Interaction
◊ Heat Transfer
◊ Hydrodynamics
Carrying out accurate and technically meaningful computational fluid dynamics simulations requires highly skilled and experienced engineers. The PES team have the applied engineering experience to ensure that they can deliver the performance in line our clients specification. The crucial element in any simulation data will be the experience of the design engineer to ensure that the data is reliable and accurate.
Whilst modern simulation software are incredibly powerful and invaluable to the design process the data output is only as could as the accuracy and validity of the data entered into the system. Our team have the experience to identify anomalies and will always back up the data with hand calculation were necessary.
